Chronology of Popes

SIRICIUS WAS Ordained a deacon by Pope Liberius and elected and elected as successor of Pope Damasus in December of the year 384. His papal decretals are among earliest surviving papal documents. Siricius' most famous decretal was issued in 386 (addressed to Bishop Himerius of Tarragona), commanding priestly celibacy. This is the first known decree on this subject and has remained in perpetuity.
