Course Description: (Two Week Online Class with Professor)
ETHICS IS THE STUDY OF human development or of human happiness. It is a philosophical study of what human beings need to develop their uniquely human potentials, which we were able to discover in the study of psychology. As a philosophical study it is limited to what can be known about this topic by reason. An additional faith perspective may be acquired by studying Aquinas' works listed in the Readings Section.
Students will become familiar with major concepts studied in ethics including the necessary distinction between ends and means, ongoing human development, happiness (eudaimonia) moral virtue, (prudence, temperance, fortitude and the various types of justice (commutative, distributive and social). They will also be introduced to intellectual virtue and its various "parts"(prudence, art, intuition, demonstration and wisdom), explore the needs wants dichotomy, and learn to distinguish between the good and the perfect as well as between the various types of human passions, their point of origin, their purpose, and their relationship to virtue and the pursuit of happiness.
