Ladislaus of Varna (1424-1444)
Ladislaus was the son of Jagiello and Sophia of Holszany. He was crowned both King of Poland (1434) and King of Hungary (1440). Ladislaus received papal legates who influenced the development of his foreign policy. The Hungarian crown was offered, in part, to assure Polish and Lithuanian assistance against the Turks who threatened Hungary. He was slain in battle against the Turks at Varna, and is known in legend as a symbolic force protecting western civilization. Reigned 1434-1444
